The Art of Kendama

S received his first Kendama (a traditional Japanese toy - the ken has cups and a spike to fit the ball) from his grandparents in Japan when he was four. He was so excited at first and kept trying to get the ball to land on the plate. The one he got can even convert levels (bigger vs smaller plates depending on your age and level), but he still couldn't get it to land. So he eventually got very frustrated and said he didn't want to play with it anymore.

Miyeokguk - A Korean Tradition

Miyeokguk is one of my favorite Korean dishes. It literally translates to seaweed (miyeok) soup (guk). Koreans usually eat/drink it for birthdays and during and post pregnancy. Seaweed has a high content of Iodine and Calcium that are both important for nursing mothers. The soup is made with meat (beef) which means it is also a good source of iron. In Taiwanese culture, our post-labor one month healing process revolves around our diet. The one month is dedicated to helping the mother heal and replenish blood and energy.

Enter At Your Own Risk

We've heard of food too cute/pretty to eat, but doors too cute to enter must be a first. These door decals by Made of Sundays (on Etsy) do just that though, and it's such a fun way to dress up a kids space (or the kid at heart).

Backyard Movie Night

School has been happenin' for about a month already and the end of summer or beginning of fall is the best time to throw a backyard movie night. I've been wanting to host one forever and I think the little guy is at the perfect age to appreciate this. It could be a "good job for loving school as much as you do!" or an "I love you so much I'm going to throw you a party with all your close buddies for no reason at all!" -party. Whatever your reason might be, now's a good time to try it.

Simply White

I had a hard time finding simple white t-shirts for the little man. I wanted simple designs on white shirts so that he can wear the t-shirts inside a button down shirt 'cause he's cool that way! So once again, I decided to buy plain T's to paint on myself because if you can't find it, make it. I bought these two t-shirts in the spring and it just took forever for me to finally get to painting them. The other day, while S was in the shower, I whipped out the paint brushes and decided to just get it done!

Mini Picasso

When you have a little one as creative as mine, you will realize that the best way to make home feel even more like home without spending big bucks on fancy wall art, is to display some (or a lot) of his art (because it is that brilliant)! For a few hours a day, S sits at his desk and tells me he's making art. He sits there quietly, cutting, taping, sticking, coloring and drawing until he's finished with his creation. He comes out of his room after making me promise not to peak while he's working, and always tells me how amazed I am going to be. That is an understatement.

8.19.15 - First Day of Kindergarten

If we humans, like birds, have a day where our littles/babies experiment and flap their own wings to try and fly. That moment when all that flapping slowly lifts the baby birds body and then he/she soars? That is the moment you wave bye-bye to your son or daughter when they set foot in their new kindergarten. Yup, it's that big a deal! Feels like it to me anyway. Preschool was a milestone for sure, but they still seemed like babies. Kindergarten truly is a whole new level. It's the real deal, it's the real world.

This Week's Party Favorites

1. I mean we all know that food themes are the best! Pretzels in all their twistiness and golden-brown-ness are one of the most popular food items, and for good reason. They just look so... GOOD. I love how simple yet eye-catching this pretzel themed party is. You know, all it takes are pretzels. (image above via Minted)

Gender Reveal Party

I remember when we found out whether we were having a boy or a girl, I lay on the hospital bed in a dark room and the ultra-sound technician was trying to keep the mood light by making jokes and being sarcastic. He made a random comment about the baby before we found out the gender, and in his sentence he said the word "HE" and I didn't let that go. I was like "you said he! you said he!" and he tried to cover it up. We were very very excited when we found out we were having a boy.

We are finally home from our trip to Europe!!! Not that it wasn't a fun trip, but S and I stayed a little too long, we actually ran out of things to do. And you know how it is after traveling for a while, you just want to come home, sleep in your own bed and eat some home-cooked meals. We decided to make a trip to London and Paris this summer because my dad (S's grandpa) is staying in London for a few months for work purposes. Naturally, we took advantange of that situation! It was my husband's first time in Europe ever! And S's too ofcourse.
